Judicial Candidate Forums
Washington State Supreme Court
July 20, 2012, 12:00-1:30pm

As the highest level of court in Washington, the Washington Supreme Court is the state's "court of last resort." It is asked to review more than a 1,000 cases each year, issuing over 125 opinions annually. Most come from the state Court of Appeals, though cases can be appealed directly from Superior Court. In the Supreme Court, no witnesses are called or other evidence taken. Rather, the Court hears only legal issues, and decides the case based on the factual record developed in the trial court. The nine justices are elected statewide to staggered, six-year terms. Three positions are contested for election on the August primary ballot, and all nine candidates have been invited to participate in this event.
