WSBA’s Civil Rights Law Section is hosting a CLE Nov 2nd, 2012,
Major U.S. Supreme Court Civil Rights Case Review - 2011–12 Term and Upcoming Term
This seminar will review major U.S. Supreme Court civil rights cases in the last term and set for the next term. Perry v. Perez is a voting rights case involving congressional redistricting maps, application of the Voting Rights Act, the growth of minority populations in Texas, and whether the districts should be drawn to create “minority-majority” districts. Arizona v. United States examines the constitutionality of State immigration laws and whether those laws are preempted by the federal laws. Looking ahead at the next term, in the affirmative action case of Fisher v. University of Texas, the Supreme Court will once again take up the constitutionality of race as a factor in university admissions. The seminar will conclude with an ethics presentation discussing ethical concerns posed by joint defense in Section 1983 cases involving individual defendants and municipalities.
