KATHLEEN SULLIVAN PRESENTS QUACKENBUSH LECTURE

ON FREE SPEECH MARCH 27 AT GONZAGA LAW SCHOOL

Lecture Titled, ‘Free Speech in the Roberts Court’

SPOKANE, Wash. – Harvard Law School Professor Kathleen Sullivan, the former dean of Stanford Law School, will present the Gonzaga University School of Law Quackenbush Lecture at noon Wednesday, March 27 in the Gonzaga University School of Law Barbieri Courtroom (721 N. Cincinnati St.). The free lecture, titled “Free Speech in the Roberts Court,” is open to the public with limited seating.

Widely recognized as a pre-eminent appellate litigator, Sullivan has argued seven cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, numerous cases before U.S. Courts of Appeal in multiple circuits and many cases before states’ highest courts. She was named in 2006 by The National Law Journal as one of the 100 Most Influential Lawyers in America. A National Law Journal article in 2011 called her a U.S. Supreme Court “superstar.” Chambers USA, which ranks lawyers and law firms, in 2012 described her as a “truly terrific” appellate lawyer who wins clients’ approval as “tremendously agile and a fabulous advocate.” Most recently, Benchmark Litigation/Euromoney Legal Media Group named her one of the “Top 10 Women Litigators” in the nation in the inaugural edition of its Top 250 Women in Litigation (2012).

Sullivan was also the first female dean of any school at Stanford when she was named dean of the law school. In 2010, Sullivan became the first woman named partner at any American Lawyer-ranked Top 100 law firm.

The Judge Justin L. Quackenbush Lecture Series honors Judge Quackenbush for his many outstanding contributions as a U.S. District Court judge. Nominated to the bench by President Jimmy Carter, and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in 1980, Judge Quackenbush served as chief judge in Spokane from 1989-1995, and assumed senior status in June 1995. An undergraduate alumnus of the University of Idaho and graduate of Gonzaga University School of Law (1957), Judge Quackenbush served in the U.S. Navy, worked as deputy prosecuting attorney in Spokane County, served in private practice, and taught as an instructor at Gonzaga’s School of Law before his appointment to the bench.
