    BOARD OF DIRECTORS, NORTHWEST JUSTICE PROJECT
    Northwest Justice Project Board of Directors – Application Deadline: September 5, 2014


    The WSBA Board of Governors (BOG) is accepting letters of interest and résumés from members interested in serving on the Board of Directors of the Northwest Justice Project (NJP). The BOG will fill at least three attorney positions for terms commencing January 2015. Two incumbents are eligible for reappointment.
    The Northwest Justice Project is a 125-attorney statewide not-for-profit law firm providing free legal services to low-income people from 17 offices throughout Washington. NJP is funded primarily by the State of Washington and the federal Legal Services Corporation, with additional support from the Legal Foundation of Washington. NJP’s 2014 budget is $22 million.


    Board members play an active role in setting program policy, assuring adequate oversight of program operations, and must have a demonstrated interest in, and knowledge of, the delivery of high-quality civil legal services to low-income people.
    NJP’s Board is a working board. Board members are expected to attend quarterly meetings in Seattle normally on the last Saturday of January, April, July and October. Board members also serve actively on one or more standing committees. The Board typically holds a one day annual Board retreat, which may be held in conjunction with an appropriate equal justice conference. Attorney Board members are expected to participate and support NJP efforts in legal community activities and limited resource development efforts. Travel and lodging expenses are reimbursed, as appropriate.

    Gonzaga Law Review Call for Submissions

    Deadline September 2014

    Dear Washington State Bar Association Members,

    The Gonzaga Law Review is seeking articles for its upcoming 50th Anniversary Edition.  Articles may have an academic or practical focus and should generally address topics related to civil rights or constitutional issues.  Because this is our Anniversary issue, the Review has a special interest in articles that reflect the way the law has changed over the past 50 years or comment on significant advancements in the legal field. We are especially interested in articles related to same-sex marriage and the Establishment Clause.

    Submissions for this edition will be due in the beginning of September, with a final date to be determined.  If you have already written an article, please feel free to submit it to the email address below.  If you are interested in publishing and have yet to start on an article, please feel free to contact the Review to discuss the requirements for publication.

    Fourth Annual Roberto Felipe Maestas Legacy Award


    Roberto’s life was dedicated to building the “Beloved Community”* through multi-racial unity and he deeply believed that poverty, racism and social inequity could only be eradicated if people of all races came together to do so.
     
    In honor of Roberto and his legacy, the Fourth Annual Roberto Felipe Maestas Legacy Award will recognize two individuals, a woman and a man, who have exemplified Building the Beloved Community through multi-racial unity and working to eliminate poverty, racism and social inequity.
     
    El Centro de la Raza will celebrate them and their contributions by making a $1,000 gift in their name to an organization of their choice. Award recipients will be recognized at El Centro de la Raza’s Building the Beloved Community Gala on Saturday, September 27th at the Washington State Convention Center in Seattle.

    Legacy award applicants can self-nominate or be nominated by someone else. Recipients are asked to participate in a video interview and attend El Centro de la Raza’s Building the Beloved Community Gala.

June took two maternity leaves while an attorney at Williams Kastner and joined Lane Powell in 1996 when her daughters were 3 and 6 years of age. June and Tom, while both working full time, navigated parenthood through the high school and college years and continue to provide advice and support as their daughters head to graduate school.

    Tina de Jong. Tina is Senior Corporate Counsel for the Farmers New World Life Insurance Company. Tina’s career spans eighteen years as in-house counsel with several insurance companies in Seattle and the East Coast. She and her husband, Leo, have a son in high school and a daughter in middle school and a few tricks up their sleeves!

    Moderators: Robin A. Schachter is the Director of Corporate Relations for Gamoran Legal Consulting, the Vice-President of the MAMA Seattle Board, stepmother to three adult children and mother of one soon-to-be middle school daughter. She recently left private practice with a firm after almost twenty years as a trial lawyer.

    NYU School of Law invites applications for its new Public Interest Law Center (PILC) Fellowship. This will be a full time, two year position, commencing in June 2014.
     
     

    Position

    The Fellow will further develop and manage the Law School's New York State Bar Pro Bono program (for both LLM and JD students), counsel recent public interest graduates who are still seeking permanent employment, coordinate the LLM post-graduate International Finance and Development Fellowship Program, and oversee the Public Service Auction.  The Fellow will also develop and undertake a research project of their choice with a Professor or Center at NYU, dependent on PILC and faculty approval.

     

    Selection Criteria

    A primary law degree (JD, LLB or other) is required, and secondary degree (LLM, PHD or other) preferred. 2+ years’ of post-graduate legal work experience is preferred, with experience in management, program development and pro bono and/or public interest work preferred.
     
    Preference will be given to creative, energetic candidates who demonstrate:

    ·         deep commitment to, and strong substantive knowledge of, public interest law;
     
    ·         excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with an ability to interact with and convey information to a diverse population;

    ·         networking skills, with the initiative and ability to reach out to organizations and attend events on behalf of PILC;
     
    ·         high levels of organization and self-motivation to successfully juggle multiple tasks and priorities; and
     
    ·         vision for a particular research project, or specific project area.

     

    Selection Process

    Donna Cochener. Donna Cochener is a partner at Davis Wright Tremaine with a practice focused on corporate securities, corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions. In addition to her "day job", Donna is the chairman of the board of Cochener Garvey Capital Partners, a company that has been in her family for four generations, and has two small and energetic boys, ages 5 and 1, and a husband who is both a graduate student and a chronic entrepreneur, currently in the process of developing his next new company. Donna is also on the board of MAMAS and the board of trustees of the Seattle Repertory Theatre and is never, ever bored.

    Andrea Ostrovsky. Andrea is a partner at Calfo, Harrigan, Leyh & Eakes where she focuses on white collar criminal defense, government investigations, and complex commercial litigation. Andrea has extensive experience defending business organizations, company employees, and witnesses in government investigations and white collar criminal cases, including cases involving allegations of environmental and safety-related criminal offenses, and in securities, health care, government contracting, and tax fraud matters. Andrea also has significant experience handling complex civil matters for both plaintiffs and defendants. Before starting private practice, Andrea clerked for the Honorable Marsha J. Pechman on the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington and Justice Robert L. Eastaugh on the Alaska Supreme Court. Andrea is the mother of two girls, Ada (3 ½) and Astrid (1 ½) and is wife to Aaron Ostrovsky, an attorney at BlackRock.

    Katina Thornock.Katina Thornock serves as Director, Corporate Counsel, Litigation at Starbucks Coffee Company in Seattle, Washington. She is responsible for overseeing tort, commercial and ADA litigation on behalf of Starbucks in North America. Katina also advises internal business units, including the company’s Global Safety and Security, Risk Management, Store Development and Supply Chain Operations departments. Katina began her career in the Prosecuting Attorneys Offices of King and Pierce Counties, Washington where she guided misdemeanor and felony prosecutions through trial. Prior to joining Starbucks, Katina gained extensive litigation experience in private practice working at the Reed McClure law firm and then Cozen O’Connor. In 1996, she graduated from the University of Washington with a B.A. in English and Political Science. She is a 2001 graduate of Seattle University School of Law. Katina and her husband have three young boys.

    The QLaw Association and QLaw Foundation will present this half-day, affordable, and high-quality CLE regarding various ways the law pertains to GLBTQ individuals and families. This program is not only a CLE but also offered for those wishing to complete training for the QLaw Foundation's Legal Clinic, and it includes the required ethics credit and other topics key to working with clients in our Clinic. This CLE and training is not required for those who have completed the CLE and training in years past, but it is provided FREE to all our wonderful Clinic volunteers.

    For the convenience of folks traveling to Seattle to attend our 2014 Banquet, this CLE will be held the day following the Banquet. You are also eagerly invited to attend the Banquet, which will be April 17th, with a cocktail hour at 5:30 p.m. and dinner beginning at 7:00, at the Fairmont Olympic Hotel.
