    Thurston County Public Defense is currently recruiting for two (2) Defense Attorney positions. These are regular full-time positions with an end date. A Defense Attorney practices in either District Court, Juvenile Court, or Superior Court with moderate to minimal supervision from a higher-level defense attorney. Immediate placement for these positions will be in the Superior Court Unit for felony representation in response to the Washington State Supreme Courts decision on State vs. Blake.

    Depending upon qualifications, the successful applicant will be placed either at a Defense Attorney I or Defense Attorney II level. The Defense Attorney II is distinguished by years of experience and the responsibility to handle both adult and juvenile felony and misdemeanor caseloads.

    Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:
    • Provides legal representation to clients affected by State vs. Blake as identified by Thurston County Public Defense under the jurisdiction of the Thurston County Superior Court.
    • Communicates with clients that are incarcerated at several Washington State Department of Correctional facilities, the Thurston County Accountability and Restitution Center and other correctional facilities throughout Washington State.
    • Performs research for State vs. Blake resentencing; prepares motions and orders to vacate convictions, and other related work that pertains to State vs. Blake. 
    • Performs a variety of legal office work, prepares appropriate legal pleadings, does necessary research, maintains required statistical information.
    • Performs other legal work as required.


    Qualifications
    • Defense Attorney I:  Graduation from an ABA accredited school of law and must be a member of the Washington State Bar Association.
    • Defense Attorney II: Graduation from an ABA accredited school of law and must be a member of the Washington State Bar Association with a minimum of two (2) years of practice as an attorney with criminal trial experience or its equivalent. 
               AND

    • Knowledge of all criminal rules of Washington State, techniques of interviewing and preparation and defense of all variety of criminal cases, with emphasis on lower level felonies and all misdemeanors.
    • Knowledge of RCW 13.34; good communication with parents, legal custodians and guardians.
    • Ability to perform legal research; analyze and apply legal principles, facts, evidence, and precedents to legal problems.
    • Present law, facts evidence and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form.
    • Work harmoniously and maintain good public relations.

    Columbia Legal Services seeks multiple full-time bilingual (English/Spanish) Staff Attorneys to join our statewide advocacy team. Our staff attorneys engage in systemic, multi-forum legal advocacy and community engagement to dismantle the structures that perpetuate poverty, racism, and other injustices in Washington and increase communities’ access to political power. We seek a mix of both developing (0+ years) and more experienced candidates. All interested applicants who meet the qualifications are encouraged to apply.

    These positions are based in Kennewick, WA and Yakima, WA. These offices have historically had a strong focus on serving immigrant client communities in Eastern and Central WA, consisting largely of farmworkers and their families. Examples of recent and current work include class action litigation on behalf of H-2A farmworkers, raising federal anti-trafficking and state wage law claims; class actions to obtain the right to overtime pay for dairy workers; legislative advocacy to ban private, for-profit detention, including the Northwest Detention Center; supporting workers at fruit packing sheds in their efforts to gain union recognition; challenging county jails’ practices of collaborating with ICE; and advocating for regulations to protect residents of temporary farmworker housing from COVID-19.

    Due to the pandemic, CLS staff have been working from home. Once it is safe to reopen the offices, this position may still do some work from home but this position will require some physical presence at the office, as well as an ability to attend required meetings at the office and in the community.

    Responsibilities:

    • Collaborate with advocates on complex trial, appellate, and class action litigation in state, federal, and administrative forums.
    • Advance policy advocacy in the state legislature and at the local and federa

    Investigate practices and laws identified by the communities we serve that affect their rights or benefits, perpetuate poverty and racism, or impact access to political power, and devise creative strategies for addressing these problems.

    • Collaborate with community groups to support their initiatives and strategies.
    • Coordinate with other advocacy groups, legal services organizations, and the private bar to identifyopportunities to advance the law for our client populations and communities.
    • Analyze complex problems using a race equity lens and develop creative, practical, systemic solutions inconjunction with clients and communities most impacted by these problems.
    • Experienced attorneys are expected to provide mentorship to others at CLS.

    CLS is proud to be a unionized employer. This full-time, exempt position is a bargaining unit position, represented by Washington Legal Workers, our in-house labor union. Salary is commensurate with years of experience, based on a scale governed by our collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for an attorney with 0-10 years of experience is $62,424 - $80,295, which increases with years of experience and includes an annual cost-of-living adjustment. Bilingual skills are compensated at an additional $720 per year. We also offer a comprehensive compensation package with 15 paid holidays, between 15-21 paid vacation days, 12 sick days, and between 3-5 personal days each year, as well as paid parental and family medical leave benefits and a partially-paid sabbatical every 7 years. We pay 100% of employee premiums for excellent health, vision, and dental benefits plus 50% of the maximum out-of-pocket deductible and offer heavily subsidized family premiums.     Patent Associate

    Dorsey’s Patent group is seeking an associate with two to three years of experience and a technical background in computer science, electrical engineering, or a related field and an interest for patent prosecution involving complex software systems.     The Metropolitan King County Council hereby gives notice of judicial vacancy in the West Electoral District of the King County District Court. The Council currently intends to fill this vacancy pursuant to state law and county code. To be eligible to serve as a district court judge in this position, an individual must be a registered voter and legal resident of the West Division’s electoral district and a lawyer admitted to practice law in Washington State.  RCW 3.34.060; K.C.C. 2.68.075.  The election precincts that make up the West Division’s electoral district are set forth in Section 1.B. of King County Ordinance 19095.  Pursuant to K.C.C 2.70.020, to be considered for appointment, a candidate must have a current rating of, at a minimum, “qualified” for a district court judicial position from the King County Bar Association and at least one other bar association operating in King County with an eligible judicial candidate evaluation process, as defined in K.C.C 2.70.020.F.2.  Under the County Code, ratings are “current” until the expiration date stated in the rating communication or until three years after the date the rating communication was issued if no expiration date is stated. Any individual wishing to be considered for appointment must deliver to the clerk of the council, in electronic form, the following application materials:

    1.  A letter of interest, which must specify the division of the district court to which the applicant is requesting appointment and should explain why the individual wishes to serve as a district court judge, how the applicant is qualified to do so and specify the division of the district court to which the applicant is requesting appointment;

    2.  The individual’s resume;

    3.  A copy of the completed responses to questionnaires submitted to the King County Bar Association to obtain its rating;

    4.  A copy of the communication from the King County Bar Association and from at least one bar association defined in K.C.C 2.70.020.F.2 informing the individual of the individual's rating for appointment to the district court; and

     5.  Any supporting information the individual would like the council to consider.
