    The Deputy Director serves as the program’s general counsel and is responsible for NJP’s effective and efficient administration and operations to ensure the delivery of high quality legal services to low-income individuals and communities.

    The Deputy Director is a member of the executive leadership team, reporting to the Executive Director, and works in close collaboration with the Executive Director, the Director of Advocacy, and the Director of Finance to provide strategic, programmatic, and race equity leadership for NJP. The Deputy Director supervises the Operations Director, Human Resources Director, and Information Technology Director.

    The Deputy Director carries out the duties of the Executive Director in the Executive Director’s absence.

    • In collaboration with the executive leadership team oversees risk management issues associated with strategic, complex, or sensitive advocacy matters.
    • In collaboration with the Director of Advocacy, oversees practice and advocacy related ethics and risk management issues.
    • Works with Human Resources Director to ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws, NJP personnel policies and the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and oversees labor-management relations, including union contract negotiations.Reviews and addresses all reports or complaints of potential malpractice or violation of professional ethics.
    • Oversees systems to ensure avoidance of risk related to quality of practice.
    • Responds to individual ethical inquiries from staff.
    • Maintains reports of grievances against NJP attorneys filed with the Washington State Bar Association, complaints filed with funders and third parties, and any complaint filed with a court regarding attorney malfeasance, including motions for sanctions and related outcomes.
    • Engages in regional, state, and national efforts to address policy developments related to regulatory, grant compliance, and other programmatic requirements impacting NJP and NJP services to client communities by providing input to regulatory entities and public and private funders

    The Gates Public Service Law Program (PSL) at the University of Washington School of Law is looking to hire for the Assistant Director position.

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Pacific Northwest Region (Region 10), Office of Regional Counsel (ORC) is seeking applications from attorneys for the position of Regional Criminal Enforcement Counsel (RCEC).  The position is located in EPA’s Seattle, Washington, office and will be filled at the GS-13 to GS-14 grade level, depending upon qualifications and experience.  ORC employs approximately 35 attorneys in the Seattle office, whose work spans environmental law issues in the geographic region of Alaska, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, including over 270 Native Tribal governments.

     

    The individual selected will be one of two attorneys responsible for all legal aspects of the federal criminal enforcement program within Region 10, including researching and resolving legal and factual questions that arise during criminal investigations and prosecutions involving the Clean Water Act (CWA), the Clean Air Act (CAA), the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and various other environmental statutes, as well as other criminal offenses under the U.S. Criminal Code. 

     

    The selected individual will work directly with agents from EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division (CID) to develop cases and with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to draft complex legal memoranda, prepare discovery, indictments, plea agreements, search warrants, motions, trial briefs and other criminal litigation documents.  The individual may be appointed as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, and in that capacity may assist with grand juries, case negotiations, hearings, and trials for various environmental criminal cases on behalf of EPA.

    The Office of Labor Standards has an opportunity for two strategic, adaptable Policy Analysts to join our highly skilled, innovative policy team in a fast-paced, dynamic work environment. These positions will work on projects that further the development and implementation of Seattle's existing and future labor standards. Our forward-thinking work focuses on policies that advance economic justice, workplace equity, and worker well-being, and centers our City's most vulnerable workers.  . This work may include legislation, administrative rules, fiscal recommendations, and programs subject to review and approval by policy makers.

    Job Responsibilities

    The Policy Analyst plays an important role in promoting workplace equity, protecting the rights of low-wage workers, helping employers comply with labor standards, and advancing race and social justice. This position will work in an independent, self-directed manner with collaboration across the OLS team.

    Policy Analysts perform extensive policy and legal research, analysis, and writing; conduct stakeholder engagement; create reports, trainings, and outreach materials; provide compliance assistance; apply race and social justice principles to all levels of work.

    Here's more about what you'll be doing:

    • Race and Social Justice.  Apply race and social justice lens to all work and engage in office efforts to eliminate racial disparities and achieve racial equity in City government and broader community.
    • Policy-making. Facilitate and support stakeholder rule-making processes with community and business organizations, employers, and workers. Conduct policy and legal research on leading enforcement and outreach practices as reported by national and local policy organizations, worker and business organizations, and local, state, and federal jurisdictions. Conduct policy and legal analysis of recommendations. Provide recommendations to the Policy Manager and Director. Create presentations, informational materials, and reports on policy recommendations and report on implementation and progress. Regularly engage with other City departments, the Mayor's Office, elected officials, other jurisdictions, and the general public.
    • Legislative and rule development. Lead and support efforts to draft legislation, administrative rules, and other written documents that incorporate multiple levels of feedback and review from internal and external stakeholders. Be highly attuned to issues that affect the workplace and policies that can mitigate or eliminate negative impacts on the most vulnerable communities, including people of color and immigrants and refugees.
    • Outreach. Support the office's outreach efforts through established and innovative means including but not limited to development of awareness campaigns; creation and leading of trainings; drafting of informational materials; management of limited budgets; and provision of expert-level, compliance assistance.
    • OLS Commission/Worker Standards Board. Provide programmatic support for the Labor Standards Advisory Commission and/or the Domestic Workers Standards Board by assisting with administrative needs; coordinating subcommittees and occasional special events; performing research; making presentations on the office's work; and facilitating discussions amongst members.
    • Strategic enforcement campaigns. Support the office's efforts to develop innovative approaches to enforcement and outreach that involve cross team collaborations and community partnerships.
    Qualifications

    A successful applicant will have a professional career that reflects a commitment to race and social justice and have demonstrated success in the research, development and implementation of ordinances, rules, policies, laws and/or programs, as well as building collaborative, effective relationships with community, policy makers, and fellow team members.

    You will be successful in this role if you have experience in:

    • Research, development and implementation of policies, laws or programs.
    • Public policy analysis, utilizing data, and/or administrative rulemaking is beneficial.
    • Project management, especially in producing, tracking and managing multiple deliverables with overlapping deadlines. 
    • Drafting briefs, ordinances, rules, or policies.
    • Familiarity with government, including experience interacting with elected officials and the public.
    • Building collaborative relationships with individuals or groups with conflicting views as well as with vulnerable populations, including those who may not have English proficiency.
    • Collaborating with workers, employers, and community or business organizations.
    • Creating and leading trainings and other presentations to various audiences.
    • Applying race and social justice principals in the workplace or community. 
    You will be prepared to take on this role if you have:
    • Strong reasoning and analysis skills to quickly understand, evaluate, and comfortably navigate policies and legal requirements.
    • Knowledge of local, state and federal employment laws, including Seattle's labor standards. 
    • Outstanding written and oral communications skills.
