UW Law Will Host Trina Grillo Retreat

The Center for Public Service Law and UW School of Law will host Trina Grillo - the annual public interest law and social justice retreat - in March. This year’s not-to-miss retreat is fabulously innovative, exploring “Social Justice Lawyering: Innovation, Creativity, Entrepreneurship,” March 22-23, 2013.

Whether you have a new idea to share with the world, started a new social justice venture recently (or not so recently), joined (or want to join) an existing social justice enterprise, or just want to learn how to encourage and support social justice efforts, please join law students, faculty, staff and public interest practitioners from WA, OR, CA, NV and CO for the annual Trina Grillo retreat at the University of Washington School of Law.

The retreat begins Friday, March 22, 2013, at the Talaris Conference Center with an exploration of “whole person lawyering” with keynote speaker Judge Mary Yu of the King County Superior Court.  Judge Yu’s talk entitled “Bringing Your Whole Self to Your Social Justice Work” will set the stage for thinking holistically about ourselves as members of the social justice community.  Following Judge Yu, the renowned Jet City Improv will engage us in activities to stimulate creative thinking in preparation for Saturday’s workshops and panels.

The retreat continues on Saturday, March 23, 2013, at William H. Gates Hall with a series of panels and workshops designed to promote and support the development of new social justice ventures.  Through a combination of facilitated panel discussions and highly interactive small group sessions, participants will learn about foundational topics like formation of legal entities and funding as well as more advanced topics like marketing.  We will end the day with a Fire Starter session to motivate us for the work we have been inspired to do.

The event is FREE for students and members of Consortium Schools and only $25 for all others.

To register, please click here. 2.5 Continuing Legal Education credits for lawyers are pending.

The Trina Grillo Social Justice Retreat is an annual event that is co-sponsored by a consortium of twelve west coast law schools, including the University of Washington School of Law, and the Society of American Law Teachers (SALT).  The Retreat provides a unique opportunity for public interest and social justice-oriented law students, faculty, and practitioners to exchange viewpoints, explore career opportunities, and formulate strategies for social justice.

The Retreat honors the memory of Trina Grillo, who served as a source of inspiration to many law students, professors, and public interest and social justice lawyers.  Read more about Trina Grillo here.
