Washington Women Lawyers affirms that the rule of law is foundational to a free and democratic society. The rule of law — grounded in fairness, accountability, and equal application of the law — protects individual rights, restrains abuses of power, and ensures that justice is not dependent on gender, status, wealth, or identity. The rule of law stands for the proposition that no one, no matter how powerful or prestigious their position, is above the law. When laws are applied unequally, when institutions are undermined, or when discrimination is tolerated, women and historically marginalized communities bear a disproportionate share of the harm.
As members of Washington Women Lawyers, we recognize our fundamental purpose as attorneys is to uphold the rights and dignity of all people, regardless of political affiliation or popular opinion. As such, WWL fundamentally opposes any action that would undermine an independent judiciary and our nation's long-held democratic values.
WWL believes upholding the rule of law requires ensuring that every individual can rely on our judicial system to safeguard their dignity, freedoms, and rights. Lawyers have a unique responsibility to uphold these principles, to speak out against efforts that erode them, and to ensure that the legal system remains accessible, fair, and free from discrimination.
WWL remains steadfast in our commitment to defending the rule of law, promoting equity within the legal system, and advancing a profession and society in which all women can fully participate and thrive. We call upon all branches of government to support the rule of law and the essential role of lawyers in our democracy, and to reject any efforts to use the tremendous power of the government against members of the legal profession performing their duty. Protecting the rule of law is synonymous with supporting, defending, and preserving the constitutions of the United States and the State of Washington.
WWL is committed to standing with all who uphold the rule of law in the face of those who would diminish it. We call upon our elected and appointed leaders — at every level of government — to honor their oaths, protect our courts, and affirm that the law belongs to everyone. To our members, our colleagues in the legal community, and all who believe in equal justice: we invite you to stand with us.
