    Join our law school community for a reception to celebrate diversity and engage in a talk about how diversity and equal justice intersect with Aurora Martin, Executive Director of Columbia Legal Services. We invite you to learn more about the School of Law’s commitment to educating the Northwest's most diverse law student body to be leaders for a more just and humane world at this reception, which caps our annual Diversity Week, a student-organized series of workshops and events focused on learning about and advancing diversity.

    This Lawyering in a Diverse World event is co-sponsored by the Access to Justice Institute, Center for Professional Development, Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality, Office of Admissions, Office of Advancement, Office of Student Affairs,
    and the Student Bar Association.

    There are four (4) diversity scholarships available to attorneys who would like to attend the ABA Section of Family Law Spring Conference in Anchorage , AK but may not have the financial resources to afford the cost.  The Conference is April 17-20, 2013. 

    If awarded a scholarship through this program, the awardees will receive a complimentary conference registration, a complimentary ticket to the Newcomers’ Dinner and the Friday (Alaska Railroad Trip) event, and up to $500 in travel reimbursement (in compliance with ABA and Section financial policies).  Send your completed application to Cynthia Swan at email: Cynthia.Swan@americanbar.org no later than March 15, 2013.  For your convenience, I have attached the application.  For more information on the conference, you can visit www.ambar.org/famlawspring

The YLD Scholarship Program is designed to encourage the participation of minority, solo/small firm, government, private sector and military service attorneys in the YLD.     PUBLIC INTEREST SCHOLARSHIP

    FOR WASHINGTON STATE LAW STUDENTS

    The Middle Eastern Legal Association of Washington (“MELAW”) will award one $1,000 public interest scholarship to a Washington state law student who has, is currently, or is planning on pursuing a public interest project that benefits the Middle Eastern community of Washington (the “Project”).

    Judging Criteria:

    Applicants will be judged on their successful completion of the scholarship application, describing their Project and connection to the Middle Eastern community of Washington. 

    Deadline:

    All application materials must be received by April 30, 2013 to merit consideration.  Please email completed applications to the MELAW Scholarship Committee at scholarship@melegal.org.

    Selection and Notification:

    The recipient will be selected and notified by the MELAW Scholarship Committee and/or Board of Directors by June 1, 2013.

    Scholarship recipients will be expected to provide a brief written report of the Project and may be asked to present on their experience at a MELAW event.

     IDGC is seeking volunteers to participate in the Measurement Ad Hoc Committee which seeks to assist legal employers in responding to or looking at diversity measurements. This will be somewhat of a follow up to past Minority Report Card efforts, and any volunteers with an interest or prior experience in the report card is particularly encouraged to volunteer.     The Initiative for Diversity Governing Council (IDGC) is hosting a Managing Partners Summit on May 22, 2013.  This is a 1-day CLE/training to share best practices and provide tools to legal employers to assist them in their efforts to cultivate a more inclusive legal workplace.  You are invited to join the working subcommittee of the IDGC to put on this CLE.  Please email Jeannie Bohlman at jeannie@michaelandalexander.com if you are interested in participating on behalf of WWL.

    The Statewide Minority Bar Association has completed some preliminary work in preparation for the 2013 Statewide Diversity conference that WAMBAC (http://www.wambac.org/) has put on for the last 5 years. The conference was postponed for 2012. There is currently a need for two individuals who would be interested in co-chairing the conference and who would also complete the planning committee. If you or anyone you know may be interested in serving, please forward their names to me or have them email me at kimtran@microsoft.comkimtran@microsoft.com>.
