    Duties

    The Washington State Attorney General's Office's Labor and Personnel Division in Olympia has an opening for an attorney interested in practicing labor and employment law, with a mix of litigation and client advice work.

    We represent and advise all state agencies and most colleges and universities on labor and employment issues, including labor negotiations and arbitrations, anti-discrimination laws, wage laws, public disclosure laws, and state and federal family and medical leave laws. We also handle civil litigation related to wage and hour law, and public disclosure. Our attorneys have significant client contact, and also appear before administrative boards, independent arbitrators, and in state and federal courts. Our practice is dynamic and challenging, and requires the exercise of diplomatic skills on top of legal advocacy.

    This full-time position is located in Tumwater, and involves occasional travel, depending on client assignments and hearing locations.

    The Labor & Personnel Division provides superb legal services in the areas of employment and labor law. We collaborate with each other and our clients in a workplace where teamwork and humor are highly valued.

    Qualifications

    The successful candidate will have:

    • An expressed interest in the practice of public sector law;
    • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills;
    • Excellent organizational skills;
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Possesses significant experience in the following areas:

    o Interviewing and preparing witnesses for hearing;

    o Interacting with and advising clients on substantive legal issues; and

    o Litigation experience (which may include hearings in administrative fora, arbitrations, and/or courts).

    While not required, experience in the labor or personnel area is preferred. Experience with contracts, immigration law, and human resources are also desirable.

    Employees in the Labor and Personnel Division work in a collaborative environment; thus the ability to work as a member of the team and to affirmatively contribute to the Division's respectful and inclusive workplace is essential and required.

    Duties

    The Washington State Attorney General's Office's Labor and Industries Division is seeking an attorney to fill the Section Chief position of its Tumwater Section. The LNI division consists of 104 attorneys and professional staff housed in Tumwater and Seattle sections. The division handles litigation and advice for the Department of Labor and Industries in a broad array of areas including: Industrial Insurance, Worker Health and Safety, Employer Audits, Employment Standards, Wage Theft, Building Trades and Crime Victim's Compensation. The workload includes client advice and high-volume, fast-paced litigation before the Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals and the Office of Administrative Hearings, Washington Superior Courts and Courts of Appeal and Federal Courts.


    The Section Chief partners with the Division Chief and other division leaders to provide exceptionally-professional legal services and foster and maintain a collaborative workplace environment that is supportive, productive and innovative. The Tumwater Section Chief leads four attorney team leaders and sixteen talented attorneys who advise and represent the Department of Labor and Industries regarding a variety of matters including: wage and hour, workers' compensation, industrial safety and health, building trades, APA, public records and public contracting. The Section Chief coaches and mentors; listens actively to team members regarding resource needs, workload balance, client needs, and professional development interests; assists with attorney and professional staff recruitment; facilitates section meetings; and provides input into performance evaluations of section attorneys, in collaboration with attorney team leaders. The Section Chief will handle client program assignments in addition to supervisory responsibilities.

    Qualifications


    The successful candidate must have:

    Position

    Columbia Legal Services seeks a full-time Policy Director to work closely with a dynamic advocacy team that spans five locations and five statewide practice groups. The Policy Director will work collaboratively with an executive leadership team and in partnership with the Advocacy Director and our Directing Attorneys. This position is based in Olympia, with statewide responsibilities. This position reports to the Advocacy Director.


    Responsibilities

    • Work with the Advocacy Director to ensure that the mission, criteria, and quality of legislative advocacy and related projects are consistent with program values and standards of systemic and multi-forum advocacy, and our broader advocacy planning and execution.
    • Develop external relations with state and federal legal and advocacy-related communities; network with advocacy groups, legal service organizations, and the private bar to identify opportunities and execute strategies to advance policy for low income populations.
    • In partnership with the Advocacy Director and Directing Attorneys, provide mentorship, supervision, and evaluation of advocacy teams.
    • Work with the Advocacy Director to develop training protocols and plans and administrative policies related to advocacy standards. Develop regular and periodic policy-related trainings, orientations, and policy advocacy updates and forums.
    • Travel around the state for meetings with practice groups, advocacy events, and other legal aid meetings; occasional national travel will be required as well to attend multi-state convenings.


    Qualifications


    • A law degree is preferred.
    • Passion, commitment, and proven track record of developing, designing, and championing anti-poverty policy and legislation.
    • At least 10 years of experience in legislative and policy work.
    • At least 3 years of experience in administrative leadership, working collaboratively with a team on large-scale advocacy campaigns and projects.
    • Experience developing best practices and advocacy resources. Additional experience on supervision, mentoring, and understanding of performance management and coaching of advocacy teams a plus.
    • Excellent research, writing, negotiation, and analytical skills.
    • Ability and willingness to work with multiple teams and manage multiple tasks in a timely manner.
    • Willingness to travel and to work flexible hours, especially during the legislative session.
    • Demonstrated initiative and creativity.
    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, cultural competence and experience working with low-income client communities.
    • Must have a sense of humor, a healthy self-awareness, be comfortable with managing change, and enjoy leading and supporting a positive, high-performing organizational learning environment.
