    Dorsey & Whitney LLP - Temporary Business Immigration Staff Attorney (#859)

    Dorsey is seeking a temporary Business Immigration Staff Attorney with 5+ years of employment-based immigration experience to join our Minneapolis or Seattle offices. The attorney hired will assist with the preparation and review of non-immigrant and immigrant visa filings, including all types of nonimmigrant work visa petitions and applications, PERM labor certification applications, EB-1, EB-2 and EB-3 Applications, I-9 and e-Verify advice. Dorsey’s immigration attorneys also support and train clients in immigration program management and compliance, and supervise the work of paralegal staff in recordkeeping and document preparation. 

     

    The following qualifications are required:

    Schroeter Goldmark & Bender has an immediate opening for a full-time lateral or contract attorney to work with our Toxic Torts team. SGB seeks candidates with at least 3 years of experience and a background in one or more of the following practice areas: complex litigation, toxic or mass torts, product liability, and medical malpractice. We are looking for someone with demonstrated litigation skills, who can work up complex cases through all phases of discovery. The applicant must be a strong writer and have experience with appeals, summary judgment motions, or other complex motions. Trial and other courtroom experience is preferred. The applicant must be licensed in Washington or be able to become licensed in Washington within 6 months. SGB works primarily on contingency, so, while the position is full-time, there are no billable-hour requirements.

    Legal Assistant / Case Manager Responsibilities 

    Provide attorney administrative support. 

    Assist with trial preparations. 

    Act as the primary contact for clients, opposing counsel, experts, and witnesses. Organize and maintain digital case files. 

    Manage document productions within the discovery database. 

    Calendar and oversee court deadlines. 

    Obtain case-specific documents from third parties. 

    Conduct general case research. 

    Draft, organize, and prepare correspondence, discovery documents, materials for expert  witnesses, and basic court pleadings for attorney review. 

    Assist with deposition logistics such as preparing notices and arranging for court reporters. File documents electronically with the court following court rules. 

    Coordinate and manage the attorney's trial calendar. 

    Provide general marketing support. 

    Prepare materials for court presentations and e-filings.




    Desired Qualifications 

    High school diploma or equivalent. 

    Working knowledge of state and federal court rules, including electronic filing procedures. Familiarity with motions practice in state and federal courts. 

    Detail-oriented, organized, and comfortable working under deadlines. 

    Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential. 

    Ability to work independently, with self-motivation, initiative, and follow up. Ability to prioritize directions from supervising attorney. 

    Aptitude for problem-solving technology and software related issues. 

    Communicates in a professional and ethical manner. 

    Clerical experience or experience in a legal environment preferred. 

    Experience with Microsoft Windows systems.

    Office Location 

    SGB has a hybrid work from home schedule. Our main office is located in downtown Seattle  (Rainier Square Building, 401 Union Street, Suite 3400). Administrative professionals are expected  to be in the office on Mondays and Thursdays; and we understand everyone has different  accessibility needs.  

    Scheduled Weekly Hours 

    SGB has a 37.5-hour work week, this may increase when our workload is heavier. The most  common work schedule is Monday through Friday / 8:30 A.M. - 4:30 P.M. 

    Salary

    Summary

    Skagit County Public Defender seeks skilled, committed attorneys to provide zealous legal representation to indigent clients. Representation may include work in Skagit County District Court, Superior Court, or Juvenile Court. Our Office represents adult and juvenile clients facing misdemeanor criminal charges, felony criminal charges, juvenile status offenses, civil contempt of court, and civil mental health involuntary treatment commitments. We are currently seeking to fill two positions. New attorneys and experienced advocates are encouraged to apply. Position and salary is dependent on experience and fit.

    Skagit County Public Defender strives to create a workplace culture that is inclusive, flexible, and supportive of our employees. Our attorneys work with in-house legal assistants, contracted investigators, and professional experts to provide client-centered representation. Attorneys are encouraged to go to trial and are supported by experienced supervisors. In keeping with state court rules and best practices, we remain within caseload standards for indigent defense and provide opportunities for in-house and outside continuing education.     Essential Functions

    Defend indigent individuals charged with a crime or other conduct that could result in a loss of liberty.

    Communicate effectively with clients to obtain information that is relevant to the defense of their case, which may include obtaining information that is relevant to the issue of release from confinement or a reduction of bail; to determine the client's goals of the litigation; to discuss possible defenses and trial strategy; and to provide legal information and advice. Attorneys maintain communication with clients in person in the office, by meeting with clients at the jail, by phone, by e-mail, or by mail throughout the course of the representation to keep their clients informed regarding the status of their case.

    Conduct or direct investigation that is appropriate for each case, including, but not limited to, interviewing State and defense witnesses, obtaining records, consulting with expert witnesses, and visiting alleged crime scenes.

    Analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the cases assigned to him or her; develop an understanding of the possible sentences or outcomes of the litigation, including immigration and other collateral consequences; and develop an understanding of the law that is relevant to the case through legal research.

    Engage in a robust motions practice involving research, writing, and arguing motions.

    Engage in negotiations with the Prosecuting Attorney to develop possible resolutions to each case that are favorable for the client.

    Appear in court at pre-trial hearings, trial, and post-trial hearings, including sentencing, restitution, and review hearings.

    Keep abreast of developments in the law and attend training sessions to receive CLE credit and to enhance knowledge of the law in his or her practice area.

    Work with social service agencies, schools, treatment providers, or other professionals. Work with young adults, youth, and children.

    Communicate with individuals who lack English proficiency. Ability to speak Spanish is desired, but not required. Additional compensation is available to employees who are proficient in Spanish and use the language regularly in their employment (per AFSCME collective bargaining agreement).

    Work with clients experiencing mental illness, drug addiction, trauma, or other issues.

    May represent clients in mental health proceedings in the local treatment facilities where clients may be confined, and work with psychiatrists and other medical treatment personnel.

    Utilize an electronic case management system to maintain accurate and current client files. Serve as a 24-hour, on-call attorney on a rotating basis (with additional compensation).

    Supervisory:

    May direct non-attorney staff on specific projects or cases, but does not have direct supervisory responsibilities.

    OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

    Minimum Qualifications

    Public Defender I

     Experience in criminal defense or civil cases handled by the Public Defender is desired, but is not required.

    Public Defender II

     Minimum two years of experience as a public defender or other significant criminal or relevant civil experience.

    Public Defender Ill

     Minimum four years of experience as a public defender or other significant criminal or relevant civil experience.

    Requires knowledge of and the ability to:

    Perform thoroughly and accurately the full scope of ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS for this position as listed above.

    WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Work is performed primarily in an office, jail, hospital, and/or courtroom environment. Job may require sitting at a desk for extended periods of time. Some bending, stooping, or light lifting to access files may be required. Public defense by its very nature is demanding and stressful. However, staff members are professionals and strive to maintain close mutual support.

A physical hazard may occur from hostile individuals, which may include verbal or physical threats, and threats with weapons.     The WSBA's mission is to serve the public and the members of the Bar, to ensure the integrity of the legal profession, and to champion justice.

    Purpose and Position Summary:

    The Equity and Justice Programs Coordinator is part of the Equity and Justice Team. The primary purpose of the Equity and Justice Programs Coordinator is to provide administrative and programmatic support to the Equity and Justice Team.

    Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities:

    Equity and Justice Team Administrative Support and Operations

    • Handle operational tasks for the Equity and Justice Team including but not limited to processing reimbursements, invoices and payments, facilitate contract approval processes, manage team communications (e.g., daily check and responding to several team email inboxes), maintenance of team web spaces (e.g., WBSA webpages, Alliance for Equal Justice website), responding to public inquiries for legal help, managing list serves (e.g., adding and deleting member names, reviewing moderated list serve messages) and supporting marketing for programs and events. 
    • Administratively support the Equity and Justice Team members on program-specific projects (e.g., support Minority Bar Association-related events and communications, process members’ request for access to public service CLEs, process members’ request for pro bono recognition) and volunteer support (below).
    • Lead team operations improvement projects including identifying and implementing in consultation with the team new systems for better efficiencies (e.g., improved filing systems, more accessible WSBA and Blink (internal staff) webpages, improved internal team processing of reimbursements, honorariums, and invoices).

    Volunteer Support

    Under the direction of and in partnership with the Chief Equity and Justice Officer, Equity and Justice Leads and Specialist, the Programs Coordinator provides varying levels of support for the volunteer entities they manage including the Access to Justice Board, the Council on Public Defense, the DEI Council, the Pro Bono and Public Service Committee and Washington State Bar Foundation Board. Tasks include but are not limited to:

    • Handle the scheduling of volunteer meetings including creating, sending out and monitoring calendar polls and reserving video conference links.
    • Open video meetings and troubleshoot members’ access to the meetings.
    • Draft and prepare meeting minutes and update WSBA website with approved meeting minutes. 
    • Compile and distribute meeting materials and update the WSBA website with meeting materials.
    • Process volunteer expense reimbursements and invoices. 
    • Maintain rosters for volunteer groups on all platforms (e.g., WSBA website, Personify, Lyris) and monitor meeting attendance.
    • If the volunteer entity is meeting in person, handle the meeting logistics including reserving meeting space and ordering catering, room set-up, clean-up, etc.
    • Develop and improve systems better communications and workflow with various volunteer entities.
    • Partner with Chief Equity and Justice Officer, Equity and Justice Leads and Specialist to support, advance and inform the substantive work of the entities.

    Event Planning and Execution

    The Equity and Justice Programs Coordinator collaborates with the rest of the Equity and Justice Team to provide varying levels of support on virtual, in-person and hybrid events (e.g., Law Student Reception, Access to Justice Board’s Post-Goldmark Luncheon Session and regional meetings and receptions, Access to Justice Conference, Pathways to the Profession Summit) including but not limited to: 

    • Support the Equity and Justice Lead (ATJ) and Access to Justice Conference Planning Committee on conference goals and planning and executing on conference logistics.
    • Assist with leading in strategic planning to determine format, content delivery and marketing of various events.
    • Research and secure appropriate venues that adhere to the WSBA accessibility policy.  
    • Work with WSBA Conference Services and off-site vendors to coordinate room set up, building, parking and A/V needs, catering, furniture, dishware, and linen rentals and other event logistics.   
    • Work with Chief Equity and Justice Officer, Equity and Justice Leads and Specialist on budget planning, executing contracts, processing event related invoices and payments. 
    • Collaborate with Communications and Outreach Department for event promotion.
    • Provide support to attendees who have questions about the upcoming events and/or need accommodations.
    • Prepare event materials such as nametags, sign-in sheets, brochures, programs, etc.  
    • Coordinate day-of event details and post-event needs such as evaluations and follow-up communications. 

    Team Collaboration

    • Work collaboratively with the Equity and Justice Team and other WSBA departments and teams to implement WSBA’s diversity, equity, and inclusion plan.
    • Contribute to Equity and Justice Teamwork like equity analyses for proposed BOG actions and promoting DEI values within the team.

    Other duties

    • Perform other duties as assigned

    Education Required:

    • High school degree or combination of relevant education and work/lived experience.                

    Experience Required:

    • Experience in program coordination, administrative support, event planning and working on a team.

    Experience Preferred:

    • Experience working in a nonprofit organization, government agency, or member association. 
    • Experience working with or serving as a volunteer on boards or committees, experience working with legal professionals, and a demonstrated commitment to equity and justice.

    Competencies (Skills/Abilities) Required:

    • High degree of proficiency with Microsoft Office 365 productivity software (Teams, Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint)  
    • High degree of comfort with learning and using technology   
    • Exceptionally well-organized and able to work in a fast-paced environment with a demonstrated ability to project manage, juggle multiple and competing demands, prioritize and re-prioritize to meet deadlines.
    • Continual and conscientious attention to detail in drafting and proofing written work.
    • Ability to anticipate next steps, take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and work well independently and as a member of the team.
    • Ability to effectively work virtually with team members that this position supports.
    • High level of interpersonal skills to communicate with staff colleagues, volunteers, partner organizations and agencies, the public and members.
    • Requires demonstrated poise, tact, and diplomacy, and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.

    Competencies (Skills/Abilities) Preferred:

    • Proficient with a variety of social media platforms and can quickly become proficient with the organization’s content management system (website), member database, and list serve application.

    Working Conditions: 

    This position, while primarily remote, must be flexible to work in office or travel within WA state as deemed necessary, or as required. This position may also have the option to work in-office. For remote work, must have an adequate home/work environment and internet access, for performing work of a highly sensitive and confidential nature.
