    Description of the position: The U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington is seeking qualified candidates from all backgrounds for the positions of Career Law Clerk and Term Law Clerks for incoming United States District Judge Lauren J. King in Seattle, Washington. These positions are open until filled, and interviews will begin immediately.

    • A total of three clerks will be hired: either three Term Law Clerks or one Career Law Clerk and two Term Law Clerks. These positions are full-time (80 hours per two-week period).
    • The start date for this position is pending Judge King’s appointment and is anticipated to be no sooner than December 15, 2021.
    • Law Clerks work closely with the Judge on civil and criminal litigation filed in District Court. Law clerks conduct research and prepare drafts of opinions and orders. Law clerks will also have the opportunity to work on various long-term projects, be involved in courtroom proceedings, and assist in the development of a judicial extern program. The Career Law Clerk will also be responsible for administrative duties in chambers, will assist in running chambers, and will assist in oversight for externs.
    • Candidates must be law school graduates from an accredited law school; be organized and work well independently; possess excellent research and writing skills; be experienced with Word, Westlaw, Lexis, and related software; and must have a demonstrated commitment to diversity and an inclusive work environment. Candidates for the Career Law Clerk position must have at least two years prior federal judicial clerkship experience or three years litigation experience. Candidates for the Term Law Clerk positions must have at least one year of federal clerkship experience or two years of litigation experience.

    The Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals is recruiting for Industrial Appeals Review/Mediation Judges.

     

    Salary Range:  $102,816 – 110,760.  Employees assigned to the Seattle Office receive an additional 5% premium pay.

     

    Location:  This recruitment will be used to fill positions in Lakewood, Olympia, Seattle, Spokane, and Yakima through 1/31/22.

    Duties: 

    Duties include but are not limited to:

    ·        Review written proposed decisions and orders of Industrial Appeals Judges, motions for stay of benefits, motions for stay of abatement, and applications for approval of claim resolution settlement agreements. 

    ·        Recommend action to the Board in written memoranda. 

    ·        Draft final orders for signature of the Board. 

    ·        Conduct mediation and settlement conferences and prepare orders on agreement of parties.

     Required Qualifications: 

    ·        Must be an active or judicial member of the Washington State Bar Association.

    ·        Significant knowledge and experience in Washington State Industrial Insurance law.

    ·        Significant experience as a presiding officer or attorney in proceedings before state or federal tribunals in which the rules of evidence are followed.

    Desirable Qualifications: 

    The BIIA is most interested in candidates who have relevant experience, skills and abilities:

    • Excellent legal writing skills.
    • Clear and effective oral communication skills.
    • Demonstrated ability to research and apply appropriate laws, rules and procedures.
    • Demonstrated ability to conduct mediation conferences while maintaining order and exhibiting judicial temperament and demeanor.
    • Demonstrated ability to maintain and manage a mediation caseload to effectively and efficiently use the resources of the agency.
    • Demonstrated advanced litigation management skills, particularly in complex litigation involving diverse interests advocated by multiple skilled professionals.
    • Demonstrated ability to rule on admissibility of evidence and procedural issues consistent with pertinent law and procedural rules and develop a record that is sufficient for decision.
    • Demonstrated ability to discern and sift through jurisdictional details.
    • Fluency in languages in addition to English.
    • Demonstrated ability to use computers and software applications including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and other computer programs.
    • Demonstrated ability to act in a professional and ethical manner and treat all people with dignity and courtesy.
    • Demonstrated ability to meet performance standards, deadlines, and work schedules.

    The Board of Industrial Insurance Appeals is recruiting for Industrial Appeals Judges (Hearings Judge).

     

    Salary Range:  $95,484 – 102,816.  Employees assigned to the Seattle Office receive an additional 5% premium pay.

     

    Location:  This recruitment pool will be used to fill positions in Lakewood, Olympia, Seattle, Spokane, Yakima.

    Duties:  The Hearings Judge presides over conferences and hearings where evidence is presented pursuant to Rules of Evidence and Superior Court Rules, and issues written decisions resolving appeals filed under the Industrial Insurance Act, Crime Victims Compensation Act, Washington Industrial Safety and Health Act, and other acts as determined by the Legislature.
     
    Required Qualifications

    Candidates must be an active or judicial member of the Washington State Bar Association.

    Desirable Qualifications

    The BIIA is most interested in candidates who have relevant experience, skills and abilities:

    • Experience in industrial insurance cases before the BIIA or equivalent in another state; and/or
    • Experience presiding as a judge in a court of general jurisdiction, a court commissioner, and administrative law judge, or a judge in a military tribunal; and/or Experience in trial practice or presiding over cases in which rules of evidence are followed.
    • Advanced litigation management skills.
    • Extensive knowledge of rules of evidence and procedural issues.
    • Clear and effective oral and written communication skills.
